Did You Have To Satisfy Certain Conditions And Provide A Deposit Before You Could Marry An Aussie
From the Warbrides Digest 13 October 2009...

"In early 1952 war brides in England still had to go through a lot of
rigmarole to marry an American. First of all, the GI had to have $900 in a
Soldiers Deposit.( this was to ensure the bride's passage back to England if the
G.I. failed to stay with her once they reached the U.S.) We also had to
have the G.I.'s Commander give approval; the bride's Vicar make a positive
statement;written permission from the parents; Wasserman tests from
doctors (to prove we didn't have a venereal disease;)and a character witness
stating the bride was not an "undesirable". It took about nine months for all
the paper work and "evidence" to be approved! I still keep all the papers
as a souvenir!"
I know my mother had to marry within 3 months of arriving in Oz or repay the fare of 350 pounds... (WWII)... but I have never heard of all these conditions being applied to marrying an Aussie.
